A Botanical Drawing a Day

Inspired by Heather Moore, this 5 minute drawing had to happen.
I need more succulents in my life.
Pen and ink, in my blue Cachet Daler&Rowney.

Liking now what I thought then

In the same spirit as my new style, these images were made more than a year ago for a cool Afrikaans newspaper (now sadly just not the same anymore), where I was the images person. They accompanied a series of articles on sustainability and the environment.

Especially the yellow one makes me happy.

50kg pure crystal silence

I saw Philip Gröning's incredible documentary Into Great Silence yesterday. It started something in me. And made me question my perspective. And made me look what I have been carrying with me.

So here are some images of the bag that gave this blog its name. I made it in June, from an industrial type sugar bag (streepsak). I made a lining for it from white embossed material. (It's a cool bag, but I think I carry too much stuff with me.)

(Read more on Into Great Silence here, and if you're in Cape Town, go see it at the Labia.)

All is full of love (Red poppy day)

My students are halfway through their end-of-year project, designing packaging for music. I'd do Bjork.

Black isolation tape (gloss and matt), mediumsmall acrylic painting, chess set (the pieces were hand-turned by a student's artist great-grandfather - one of the most profound gifts I've ever received). The south-facing wall of our office.

Detail I (tape is fantastic)

Detail II (with a nod to designer/artist Bruce McKay)

Why we fly II

I took this 26th October, over the Cape Flats as our plane descended for landing. You can try to confine the human spirit to a grid.

Leafy

Here are some recent pages from my drawing book.

[Stefan celebrated his last exam on Friday by buying fantastic plants for our potted garden, but no stretched out holiday for the good student yet: first a full-week full-day course on the urban environment and sustainability (something like). These are for him - he enthused me for bulbs and pelergoniums and all such incredible design.]

Dusty water, watery dust

Stoneware in 2 shades of white, smooth inside and textured outside (Jess pioneered the texturing technique :) and the grass is from the Pipe Track above Camps Bay.

Many, many bowls and plates and things, mostly monochrome, lots of leaves, lines and letters.

Fresh air

Acrylic on canvas on board. Inspired by an article in National Geographic on poverty in India, that featured an image of a baby sleeping on a swept floor, in the cool of a fan.
